Shoulder Replacement

Each year the total joint surgeons at Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group perform thousands of surgeries to help patients young and old regain their quality of life. If you need shoulder replacement surgery, you can trust our board-certified, fellowship-trained surgeons to help minimize your pain and restore your function.

Your shoulder is a ball-and-socket joint, and it has the greatest range of motion of all the joints in your body. Injury, arthritis, and overuse can cause the cartilage in the shoulder joint to degenerate, leading to pain, weakness, and decreased range of motion.

There are two approaches to total shoulder replacement: traditional and reverse. With both types of shoulder replacement surgery, our physicians utilize computer-assisted surgery to help them precisely place the artificial joint implants for the best fit and smoothest motion. Based on your diagnosis and severity of damage within the shoulder joint, your doctor will determine which procedure is right for you.

Total Shoulder Replacement

Traditional total shoulder replacement is recommended for people with bone-on-bone osteoarthritis and intact rotator cuff tendons. The damaged head of the humerus (upper arm bone) is replaced with a metal ball and the shoulder socket is replaced with durable plastic.

Reverse Shoulder Replacement

A reverse shoulder replacement is recommended for people with a completely torn rotator cuff that cannot be repaired, severe arthritis with rotator cuff damage, or prior failed shoulder surgery.

Traditional total shoulder replacement surgery would still leave these individuals unable to lift their arm. With a reverse shoulder replacement, the position of the ball and socket in the joint are switched. Such placement allows the deltoid muscle, instead of the damaged rotator cuff muscles, to raise the arm.

Partial Shoulder Resurfacing

Partial shoulder resurfacing involves removing the cartilage from the damaged head of the humerus (upper arm bone) and replacing it with a metal covering, or “cap-like” prosthesis, as in a total shoulder replacement. The socket is resurfaced and smoothed into a shape that matches the humeral head.

Following shoulder surgery, you will go through several weeks of physical therapy to help you safely recover and regain your mobility as quickly as possible.

At Colorado Springs Orthopaedic Group, we are proud to have helped thousands of people recover their shoulder function and eliminate or minimize their pain. Call (719) 632-7669 to schedule your appointment.
